Purpose of the Role
The Claims Officer will support RAF’s legal operations by managing litigated claims efficiently, promoting timely settlements, and reducing unnecessary legal expenditure. This position is ideal for legal professionals who want to make a meaningful difference in public service while sharpening their litigation acumen.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct thorough assessments of litigated claims files

Investigate and evaluate claims for fair and prompt resolution

Lead and participate in settlement negotiations to reduce litigation backlog
-
Assess merits, quantum, and general damages in accordance with applicable legislation
-
Process settlements for loss of earnings, support, medical and funeral expenses
-
Oversee block settlements and the appointment of quantum/merits assessors
-
Perform and report on writs, bridge assessments, and approvals
-
Prepare and verify documentation for RAF Attorneys in preparation for trial
-
Liaise with legal counsel regarding litigation strategy and court processes
-
Review trial outcomes and out-of-court settlements for reporting and process optimization
-
Monitor outstanding information, reports, and diarise for follow-up
Required Qualifications & Experience
-
Minimum Qualification: A four-year Degree in Law or equivalent
-
Professional Requirement: Admission as an Attorney or Advocate of the High Court
-
Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience in claims handling or litigation
Core Technical Competencies

Deep knowledge of court procedures, litigation rules, and legal processes
-
Proven ability to analyze claims, legal documentation, and medico-legal reports

Sound understanding of RAF’s operational and litigation infrastructure

Excellent report writing, data analysis, and communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
